Quotes and Sayings by Aesop

Do you remember those Aesop’s fables we so lovingly read as kids. And those moral lessons in the forms of Sayings and Proverbs.

I have compiled a list of some of the quotes from Aesop’s which are my favorites as well.

“A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him.” What you see is is a lesser danger than what you don’t.

“Every truth has two sides; it is as well to look at both, before we commit ourselves to either.”

“Don’t let your special character and values, the secret that you know and no one else does, the truth — don’t let that get swallowed up by the great chewing complacency.” This is a nice quote on character,

“Appearances often are deceiving”. And how sad that we often go by the appearance, and get deceived by it again and again.

“People often grudge others what they cannot enjoy themselves.” Now we see this kind of people everyday, at work at school, at the university. Instead of learning to enjoy it themselves, they often grudge what people enjoy, and this has been going on from the time of Aesop. And is going on till now.

One of the most common and famous of Aesop’s Proverbs,

“Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”

” Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him.” words of wisdom.

“There is always someone worse off than yourself.” How true, but we never remember this things. It would do very well, if we can remember this proverb in times of adversity. If your dinner is not tasty, remember that there are people who sleeps on a single meal.

“The unhappy derive comfort from the misfortunes of others.” These are the very people who are filled with hate and jealousy and cannot share the simple joys of your neighbors achievements. I pity those men. seriously.

“We often give our enemies the means for our own destruction.” Which is so true. We never get to know the intention of our enemies, and in our hate and haste, we often end up being the vulnerable one.

“Persuasion is often more effectual than force.” This Aesop saying is what Don Vito Corleone followed as a principle in his life, ” I will give him an offer he can’t refuse what he said”.
